• Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC)
  Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) is a sophisticated stabilization system which, in addition to the STC functions, intervenes and corrects any tendency to skid. A number of sensors monitor the rotational speed of all four wheels, the driver's steering wheel input - e.g. the steering angle - and the course of the car. The DSTC control unit processes these signals and, if any deviation from the norm is detected, such as the start of a rear-wheel skid, the system intervenes and gently activates the brakes to the appropriate wheel to put the car back on course again. It also reduces engine power if necessary.

• Collapsible Steering Column
  The steering column has an advanced safety design. Both the upper and lower sections telescope in a frontal collision. This helps reduce the risk of injury to the driver in frontal collisions.
• Side-Impact Protection System (SIPS)
  Volvo's patented Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) helps reduce the risk of serious injury in a side-impact. SIPS consists of a strong body structure with a number of interacting features, all of which help to distribute and reduce the collision energy. The structure of the car body is designed to reduce the deformation of the side of the car in a side impact. By utilizing large parts of the structure of the car, the collision energy is distributed and absorbed in the transverse direction. SIPS comprises reinforced body components such as side members, roof pillars, roof, doors, and cross-members in the floor and along the dashboard. Transverse tubular sections have been fitted in the front seats, and between them there is a special "box" that transfers the force to the other side of the body. In addition, there are strong distance blocks in the doors and energy-absorbing material in the door panels. They help to reduce the impact on the occupants.
• Safety-Cage Passenger Compartment
  The front and rear crumple zones help to dissipate and distribute incoming collision forces to help reduce the physical strain on the car's occupants. The vehicle's structure is intended to keep the passenger compartment intact, including the roof pillars and transverse roof profiles, since they absorb a great deal of the forces if the vehicle starts to roll. They form an interactive web of steel profiles, of which the most crucial parts are made of ultra high-strength steel. In a side collision, the side-impact protection system helps distribute the crash forces across a large part of the car's body so as to help minimize the strain on the occupants.

  All the panels and door sides are padded with energy-absorbing materials to help reduce the risk of injury to the car's occupants.

• Airbags

• Side Impact Air Bags for Driver and Front Passenger
  The side impact air bag, or SIPS bag, supplements the SIPS system. It helps to reduce the risk of serious injuries to the chest and hips in a side-impact collision for driver and front seat passenger. This bag is integrated in the outer edge of the front-seat backrest. This location ensures that the SIPS bag is always in the right position in relation to the occupant, no matter how the seat has been adjusted. They inflate in a fraction of a second and are fitted in the outer edge of the front-seat backrests, which means that they are always positioned securely by your side. Together with the SIPS system and the Inflatable Curtain (IC) the SIPS bags provide a unique level of protection in a side-impact.
• Driver and Front Passenger Supplemental Restraint System - Dual-Threshold Air Bags
  The air bags are designed to deploy in milliseconds to help reduce an individual's forward motion in certain front or front-angle collisions. With seat belts buckled, a Volvo offers state-of-the-art protection. Dual-threshold air bag technology takes into account whether the seat belt is being used and the actual speed of impact to determine whether it is necessary for the air bag to be discharged. This system is designed to help ensure protection while saving a properly belted front-seat occupant from being exposed to an unnecessary air bag deployment.
• Inflatable Side Curtains (IC)
  Volvo's unique IC system comprises two inflatable "protective curtains." They are fitted under the roof lining, along each side of the car and help protect front and rear seat passengers alike. In a collision, the curtain is released and inflates to full volume in about 25 thousandths of a second. After about three seconds, the deflation process begins; it takes place slowly to provide maximum protection in multiple collisions. The air channels do not cover the whole of the curtain but are concentrated in the areas where the occupants of the car could hit their heads. As a result, no more gas than necessary is required and the inflation time is as short as possible.
  
  The IC only inflates on the side where the impact takes place. It is activated by sensors in the B-pillar and behind the rear-door opening. The same sensors are used to activate the SIPS (side impact) bags. If only the rear sensor is activated, only the IC inflates - not the SIPS bags. The gas in the IC is a mixture of argon and helium and is harmless to human beings and the environment.
• Weight Sensor for Front Passenger Air Bag
  To determine if the front passenger air bag should deploy or not, it is important to know if the seat is occupied. This safety system senses if the front passenger seat is occupied. From this determination, the front passenger airbag is activated or deactivated. A light will be displayed in the overhead console (above the rear view mirror) to indicate when the front passenger airbag is deactivated.

• Anti-Submarining Seats
  Both the front and rear seats feature anti-submarining guards. The contoured shape of the seat frame with the high front edge helps to prevent occupants from sliding under and out of their belts in a collision.
• Dual Integrated Child Booster Seats (Optional)
  The two outer seats at the rear can be equipped with integrated child booster seats. They help to ensure that children sit at the right height to use the seat belt. At the same time, they have a much nicer view.
• Overhead-Mounted Seat Belt Reminder Lights
  Seat belt reminder lights are located just above the rearview mirror on the roof. They remind you to fasten your seat belt when entering the vehicle.
• ISOFIX Baby/Child Seat Attachment System
  Children will always be your most precious cargo. The Volvo child-safety seat system consists of a frame with ISOFIX mounting for you to attach an optional baby seat or a child seat. ISOFIX is an international system that is designed to make it easier to correctly install and remove equipment. The ISOFIX frame is standard.
• Seat Belts: 3-Point Inertia-Reel with Automatic Pretensioners for all Seating Positions; Front Belts include Height Adjustment
  All seating positions in Volvos are equipped with 3-point inertia-reel seat belts with automatic pretensioners. These pretensioners automatically tighten the seat belts in a split second in the event of a collision. The front belts include height adjustments.
• Padded Head Restraints
  All seating positions in the vehicle have a head restraint, helping to reduce the risk of whiplash injuries.
• Whiplash Protection Seating System (WHIPS)
  Rear-end collisions often produce serious neck injuries, otherwise known as whiplash injuries. The injuries are caused by the catapult effect - when the passenger or driver is thrown forward after the first impact. If the car is struck from behind, the system is activated in two phases. During the first phase, the wire frame and the limited-travel springs help prevent the occupant of the seat from being pressed too deeply into the backrest. It also provides support for the spine. At the same time, the WHIPS mechanism enables the whole of the backrest to move backwards - to prevent the passenger from being thrown forwards. The upper part of the backrest enables the head restraint to better support the neck and head. In the second phase, the WHIPS mechanism allows the backrest to tip backwards, absorb the force generated by the collision, and reduce the catapult effect. WHIPS is designed to provide protection at speeds of up to approximately 20 mph (30 km/h), precisely the low speeds at which most whiplash injuries occur.
• Top-Tether Child Seat Anchorage Capability
  The vehicle is fitted with child-seat top-tether anchorages for the rear seat. All the seat belts, except for the driver's seat, are equipped with automatic-locking retractors in the belt reel. These help to keep the seat belt taut when used for attaching a child seat.

• Rear Window Deactivation
  A Rear Window Deactivation button disables the rear windows from being opened. This helps prevent small children from opening the windows via the rear-door switches.
• Safe Approach and Home Safe Lighting
  To enable the car owner to approach the car safely and securely in the dark, there is an "Approach Light" function. Pressing the yellow button on the remote control activates the interior lighting and several other light sources which illuminate the area around the car. To enhance the level of personal security, there is "Home Safe Lighting." Pulling the high-beam flasher lever after removing the ignition key turns on the high-beams and several other light sources, which illuminate the car owner's path for up to 90 seconds after locking the car.
• Security System
  The Volvo alarm helps to provide excellent anti-theft protection. This sophisticated alarm system is fully integrated in the electrical system of the car and is therefore very reliable. The alarm system is based on the central locking system with its remote control and "rolling codes."

• Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS)
  IDIS is a new feature for the automotive industry that was inspired by fighter aircraft technology. The more on-board communication and information systems are built into the car, the more important IDIS becomes. IDIS helps reduce information-induced stress levels. The ingenious system monitors your attention workload and delays the less important information when you need to focus. This matters in driving situations such as hard braking, accelerating and stopping for children in the crosswalk. IDIS continuously registers the driver's activity by monitoring steering wheel angles, acceleration, turn signal function and more. This system then works to reduce visual warnings in the instrument panel in high-stress driving situations.

• Key Integrated Remote Control with Central Power Door Locks
  Key Integrated Remote Control combines the functions of the remote key fob (door/trunk-tailgate/opening and locking, Safe Approach and Security System), the car key, and the valet key into one combined unit. You can release/close the key through a push button located on the key's housing. There is also a panic alarm feature. In the event of trouble, press the panic alarm button and the alarm will sound.
• Rear-Door Child-Safety Locks
  The rear doors can be locked using a special latch on the doors. When the lock is activated, the rear doors cannot be opened from inside the car. The result is an increased level of child safety.
• Immobilizer, Encrypted Ignition Key
  The Volvo is equipped with a sophisticated challenge-response electronic immobilizer. Each ignition key supplied with your vehicle is electronically coded. When the key is inserted into the ignition switch, the code is transmitted to and compared with a code stored in the start inhibitor module. The car can be started only if a properly coded key is used. If the code from the key does not match the vehicle system, the engine will not run. As a result, it is virtually impossible to "hot-wire" and drive the car without the original key(s). An LED on the top of the dashboard flashes at 2-second intervals when the ignition has been switched off and the immobilizer is active.

  The trip computer stores information gathered from several systems in your car and has four menus that can be displayed in the text window. The functions measured are driving distance on current fuel reserve, average fuel consumption, current fuel consumption and average speed. (included in Select Package for 2.4i).
