Ford Explorer received 5 stars in crash test ratings. In 2006 and 2007, Explorer received a 5-star crash test rating for all four crash seating positions (driver and right front passenger for frontal crash, and front and rear seating positions for side-impact). The 4.6L 3V V8 achieves EPA estimates of 15 city/21 hwy mpg in 4x2 configuration and 14 city/20 hwy mpg in 4x4 configuration (EPA estimated mpg).

The 2nd-row seats fold out of the way to allow easy access to the available 3rd-row seating. Third row seating offers 50/50 split design with manual or optional PowerFold operation. In the optional 7-passenger seating configuration, the 2nd-and 3rd-row seatbacks fold and tumble out of the way. The optional leather-trimmed driver's seat includes 10-way power and is standard on Eddie Bauer and Limited, optional on XLT.
